Oh I am so glad to hear it! I'd been concerned seeing the auctions still live on the NFT website, it really sucks that you can't back out of auctions once they're started but I'm guessing that must be an attempt to cut down on scams

Thank you guys for promising to communicate in the future before launching something like this <:>

And as for other ways to support the site, I think physical merch could work really well! Especially if there was an option to verify your purchase to earn pixpet tickets from that :O

I remember back on dragonadopters, the dark dragon got a plush made but I don't know how Komodos experience with that was, or if it went well enough that he'd be willing to try again? I've seen a couple successful kickstarters get launched for plush toys and enamel pins, maybe that would be a good way to get that going with less worry about striking even/profit? Cos y'all have my sympathy, making merch is a huge investment and that can be terrifying to make even when the economy isn't doing backflips

Ah, I wasn't aware NFTs were added...

I'm glad you decided to go back on this decision. It's good for developers to communicate things to the players. ^^

Your honesty and reaction are appreciated. Though I imagine in the future, it would be wise to look into these things to avoid making such a mistake again. NFTs are notoriously hated by most art communities and it doesn't take a long gaze to find that criticism.

There were NFTs? I was never aware of that.

Me neither (tho that's probably because I'm barely active in the Discord server)

Merch doesn't really make much if you haven't like 100reds of people ordering, so this is more like fan service. Also plushies need to be designed and whatnot so you got to sell maybe a thousand to make up the design costs. The original Dark Dragon Plush was pitched on a site called patchtogether.com, but they don't support user pitches anymore because the low stock amounts they had to produce were not economically feasible in the long run.

I'm not even sure physical merch would be any better than an NFT environmentally. You'd have to use resources to ship the items for one thing.

While I'm 100% behind protecting the environment and holding people accountable for their actions, there's a point where I think our standards and expectations become a little bit unrealistic. Every store we shop at, everything they sell was shipped to them on carbon-spewing semi trucks, boats, and/or planes (with rare exceptions of electric vehicles). By buying anything at all, we're perpetuating that process. Human society in general damages the environment. If we wanted it to stop, the global economy would need to come to a standstill.

I'm not saying it's acceptable, because it's not -- and there's definitely some due diligence for creators and influencers to do before selling merch, like selecting shipping materials or even the type of merch. But I just can't see someone as a monster for selling things like T-shirts and stickers to their fans. There are only so many ways that independent content creators can make money and survive. I would rather focus on corporations which do the most damage.

Admittedly this is a moot point, since Komodo doesn't want to sell physical merch anyway, but I felt the need to reply since it concerns a lot of creators and their livelihoods.

TL;DR I absolutely agree with your feeling, but the issue is more complicated xwx;

I'm really glad you rolled back this decision, but something about the OP rubs me the wrong way. "Subtracting the negative reactions, NFTs was totally fine and gaining popularity at the start of 2021" is EXTREMELY worrying. Are the devs like, not in any queer or leftist circles at all? Like, the second NFTs started being a thing, every queer and furry community was talking about how they're shit. The devs having no idea of this makes me worried about what circles they're in, like are they crypto fans or something? 😬

I really really hope the devs are more cautious about adding crypto-related anything, especially when it's something that boils down to fancy expensive environmentally-destructive receipts

It's called: You do your best to MINIMIZE your damage to the environment. You can't stop all damage you might do, because of capitalism, but you should still try and do as little damage as possible. Additionally, the "corporations which do the most damage" are the corporations that make the materials that content creators are using to ship. Like, these corporations do this much damage at the behest of the people paying them to do so.

Hey there @inked, welcome to the game.

To clarify something that wasn't explained fully in the first post, Komodo made and announced the Pixpet NFTs without consulting the staff team or Patreon supporters -- which is unlike him. So some of us did know about the environmental perils of crypto (not including myself, as I avoid social media for mental health reasons). Pixpet's community manager, Takkju, has talked to him and I believe that Komodo will resume his previous practice of consulting staff and/or patrons before implementing plans of this nature. In other words, this is not the result of anyone's political background, but a momentary lapse in judgement on Komodo's part -- which can happen to any of us.

It's also important to note that there were a significant number of players who didn't know that crypto was harmful until this happened. A few didn't even know what NFTs were. We saw this on the Discord server and in DMs. I'm a queer individual and also consider myself a leftist, and as I said, I didn't know about this either. So I don't think it's fair to expect everyone in certain social circles to have the same knowledge.

I agree wholeheartedly, so I'm not sure what to say to you there.

I definitely support pixpet having monetization options (since the website needs money to run) but I’m really glad they took the environmentally sound option.

Well, I was probably as baffled as everyone when Komodo announced them out of the blue - or when I saw it a few hours later.
Also, to add clarification, I was only talking about the sudden spike of popularity NFTs were getting, not that they were fine. I know there was a ton of backlash regarding them and I am personally not a fan of NFTs (or anything crypto-related) myself. But my issues with that kind of stuff lies mostly somewhere else.
As for Komodo, I can assure you that he is not in some weird circles, news of the bad rep just someone flew over his head ever since they were everwhere. Which can happen. I mean, no one can possibly keep up with everything.

Anyhow, Important We all have learned from this experience and do our best that something like this won't happen again.
And thanks to @BK47 for explaining this too since these night shifts currently are killing me x.x
