Hey Pixpet pals!

It's great that Pixpet has a plethora of pixel plants to procure... but does anybody else here also collect REAL LIFE plants?

Whether you have one sad little fern named Fred or hundreds of prickly cacti, I would love to hear about your plants!

I personally am a succulent hobbyist! I have two shelving units in my bedroom with grow lights, and I have over 75 individual cultivars. I mostly have Echeveria, with a smattering of others. As an example to start the thread off, this is one of my favorites - a little Echeveria "Flying Cloud!" It was imported from South Korea but the cultivar was originally developed and named in California. This guy is really small and was purchased at a discount because he was kind of scraggly, but he's done quite a glow-up in the months since!

I feel experienced enough that I am happy to answer any questions about succulents. The main thing I don't feel confidently versed in are cacti. I've got one, and she's really pretty, but I'm still learning with her.

Enough about me - LET'S TALK PLANTS!

Don't have pictures right now, but I do have two succulents and a spider plant I got for my dorm. I might be getting a few more succulents since I've taken a few of the bottom most leaves from the succulents and planted them. A few even started putting down roots!

Oooh I love propagating! It really is super easy, but it seems to take months for a baby plant to fully form from a leaf. I actually just gave away a bunch of baby succulents that I grew from leaves that were started over the summer. I've got a shelf with a bunch of babies still growing on it!

Do you know what types of succulents you have?

I believe one's a hybrid of the other and is pale whitish green with pink tips. Both kinda remind me of roses with pointy, but not sharp, tips for the leaves which are kinda plump. The other is plain green coloring and is a bit stiffer compared to the other. Oh! Also the hybrid is supposed to eventually sprout flowers from the center on a vine.

I love plants but I have notoriously bad luck at keeping them alive. Right now I have an extremely tiny succulent child given to me by my mother, it didn't come with any care instructions though so I'm just watering it with a teaspoon every now and then and hoping it turns out ok!

I am always happy to help out with succulent bebs! Make sure it gets lots of sunlight. It'll probably do fine with how you're watering it now, since you're being careful! But if you ever feel up to pampering it a bit, they do best in pots that have a drainage hole (to prevent water from sitting in it and rotting), gritty soil (so like 50% reg soil mixed with 50% perlite or other small rocks), and deep drenches of water (until it runs out the hole of the pot) whenever the soil is bone dry. You can check to see how wet the soil is with a wooden chopstick or skewer - just stick it down through the top and leave it there for 15 mins before pulling it out to feel for dampness. They're really not all that finicky, and they will thrive with some simple TLC!

Plaaaaaants! I am currently a poor, constantly-moving student, so I can't keep too many plant babies, but I have three as of now--an aloe, some sort of cactus, and a basil plant! My dream is to just have an entire room of succulents and plants one day, though that dream's a little far away

I am a huge plant lover. I currently have a beautiful amaryllis, 2 snake plants, a Christmas cactus, an aloe vera, a succulent, and 3 cactuses.

I propogated aloe vera.

You can see amaryllis, 2 cactuses and succulent:

Oh man - that IS the dream, isn't it?! I've done the best I can in my apartment. I have a nook in my bedroom that has transformed into my plant haven. Because I get no direct sunlight through my apartment windows, it's all powered by grow lights, but I one day hope to have a home with big beautiful windows with lots of sunlight where I can have a far more natural space.

@LuckyBonsaiTree
I love your username! And holy moly, that amaryllis is GORGEOUS! I always see bulbs at the store but don't have the first clue about caring for them. It looks so happy!

@Ganymede Ohmygod, you have so many! I'm actually super jealous right now I wish I could have shelves and shelves of plants. I hope one day you'll have a huge sunroom of plants! I'm lucky that there's a super lovely greenhouse right near where I live (literally a 3 minute walk) with tons of plants, so I walk around it a lot and just dream of when I can have that many plants!

Oh yeah, I've seen pictures of people with TONS of shelves of plants! I can only imagine what it takes to maintain them. Thankfully, with my succulents, they only need to be watered at 1-2 week intervals (depending on the plant), but it takes me a good 2 hours to water all of them, clean them up, inspect for bugs, etc. But I enjoy it!

I am endlessly jealous of all the people I see living in California with huge, beautiful outdoor succulent gardens. My area's climate gets too frosty in the winter to keep much of anything interesting alive outside.

@Ganymede

Your plant area is amazing omg. I wish I had that. <3

And my bulb was in wax so the roots where chopped off but the some of the roots were left still but very tiny and it is taking water I know. So that means it will survive one season and the roots are already growing but very slowly. I am glad I ripped of the wax carefully of course. And the second stalk is growing as well as the main one. It is a giant amaryllis. <3

@Ganymede both of my cacti get watered pretty infrequently, but the basil has to be watered so frequently, he gets so upset when I don't water him every 3 days or so. Thankfully I don't have much to inspect for problems.

Oh I could only ever dream of an outdoor succulent garden, but it's a bit too cold here too for an outdoor garden, at least not one that lives through the winter

I have a whole bunch of cacti that live outside since I live in the right climate for them to thrive XD

I tend to collect the odd looking ones so i've got a cactus that grows fluff on it, one that has fish hook spines and a couple that grow really tall and have the soft spines. One of mine even has babies, but I'm too scared to try and give them their own pot

I love plants but I am...mediocre at best at keeping them alive. Right now I have a little cactus (?) (it's orange...I don't know if that's its natural color. Can a cactus be dyed or something??) and a bromeliad that is growing pups. Come spring I'll be starting up my garden again.

I am absolutely horrible at keeping plants, i don't have time or interest in keeping them. That said i do really like cacti. I have no idea what the one i currently have at my window is called but it does have spines like fish hooks.

I love plants but I'm terrible at keeping them alive, either overwatering, not enough watering, or my dogs always digging them out of their pots. My top three favorites are daffodils, cacti, and venus flytraps.

@Ganymede I'm SO jealous of your setup, it's beautiful ;n;

@LuckyBonsaiTree That amaryllis is gorgeous

I've been meaning to post here! One of my hobbies is growing fruit plants that are hard to find in the U.S. I think it's a shame that there are so many fruits we'll never get to try because they don't ship well and other reasons I forget, lol. Unfortunately my hobby only started about five years ago, so none of my plants have reached their fruiting stage. On top of that, I recently moved and couldn't take my largest/most mature plants with me, so I have to start over with those. Right now I'm growing Bolivian mangosteen, which is related to the more known(ish) purple mangosteen, but supposedly this one tastes better! They're very young and boring-looking right now, and they've also been through some heat and cold damage from the move, so they don't look very healthy. But I'll post a picture of my simple setup:

I plan to transfer them to bigger pots with fresh soil soon because they haven't shown any new growth in about four months, and I don't know if this is because of the heat/cold damage or if they're possibly root bound.

And these are some fruits that I'd like to grow in the coming years (images taken from Wikipedia mostly) if I can get my hands on some seeds/cuttings/live plants:

And for the sake of being relevant to Pixpets, here are some progress photos of dragon fruit cacti that I grew from seeds a few years ago!
