Aquarium hobbyists - what's your favourite fish? (35 Posts and 232 Views) | |

It's always weird to see unusual combinations work isnt it? All your previous experience and logic tells you it shouldn't work but it's right there, it's undeniable, chichlids hanging out with guppies or pea puffers chilling with shrimp. It's a bizarre feeling. Since I last posted in this thread, I've actually gotten some new fish, some new favourites :) These guys are Albino Glowlight Tetras, and the picture really doesnt do them justice. It's incredilbe to be able to look at them and see their innards, it really puts into perspective the wonders of life. It's really quite humbling. |

My fishstores are very lacking because of being in a state where many animals are banned so they don't accidentally kill off the native species. I've only personally seen neon/cardinal tetras and never the other variants. I see that they seem to work well with other tetras as well! Good to know! I was actually thinking of adding tetras to my guppy tank as I'm slowly making the guppy tank into something else as they unfortunately die off but I can't get my water below 7.5 ph. I'm thinking of doing rasporas instead. |

It's not really an issue for me since I live in Hong Kong but for some of my Amino friends over in the states its a pretty big annoyance. But rasboras are definitely super pretty! Also, i've heard that PH isn't too important for fish, and that a consistent PH is far better than a specific one. But in this hobby you never know whats definitely true, its all anecdotal isnt it :). Good luck with the new additions, i'd love to see some pictures when they're settled in and acclimated. |

Here's our boy Abe (short for Abraham Sapien) whom we rescued from a Walmart before they thankfully stopped selling live fish, he was bullied and near-starved by peacock cichlids in the same tank. Fortunately he grew up to be this gorgeous boy seen in the second picture! He is very personable and when he's not being a sulk he loves to watch his mom working on her computer, or he'll come "dance" with me at the front of the tank to beg for snacks. Also, bonus photo of my (former) betta sorority tank, these ladies got along quite well, other than some food aggressiveness which was to be expected. I miss them, but unfortunately it's to be expected with the way mass breeders and chain pet stores house them so improperly. |

I have no idea why the picture flipped whoops. Incoming picture time so I can show you guys how my tanks are looking! This is my "mansion" as my sister likes to call it for my single baby girl Ariel. She HAD shrimp in her tank...turns out she really likes shrimp. She's behind my computer since its always on (I don't have the fan directly on the tank) so her water is a few degrees higher than everyone else...everyone else is in the 77-80 degree range and hers is 84-86 degrees. Because I can live in those degrees, I actually have never needed a heater. This is my danio tank and they are actually breeding in this setup o.o only 2 of them are two inches which is why I got the new 20 gal in there...also will be the new home for my betta (once i remove the shrimp in there) The new tank! I need to get a bigger filter since my original plan was to use both of these filters...but I dont have the plugs for them XD rn I'm just hoping the baby danio fry I have in there will live long enough for me to find a sponge filter for them...or a prefilter to put on a normal filter. I also just bought new plants for this tank! They should come in tomorrow...I got 2 ferns (the person didn't know which kind but the pictures looked like java fern) and a big anubis plant! Knowing me, It'll add more plants... And then the tank that started it all...and where my eventual rasporas will go! I'm going to check tomorrow since they said they might get a new shipment of them tomorrow. Though I am SO tempted to get their diamond tetras...I can't believe they actually carried them! The picture even caught my elusive clown loach since they generally flee at the sight of me. I also currently have an algae problem and for the life of me I cannot figure out what it was...my only thought is I have too much phosphates which I need to figure out how I can even tell. I think the one leaf on the amazon sword is dying/dead so I will need to snip it later...but I doubt its the cause of the algae problem. |

Unfortunately, I cannot treat him since I also am raising baby fry in there as well for the same reason of not having enough tanks. I also lack a breeder box and pretty much my fish stores are closed so I can't go out to get a breeder box... |

If so, pulling him out was a good idea as it may very well have been another fish biting him, but if it happened gradually it may be that he has Fin Rot, which it's good to separate him in that case as well so he doesn't risk contaminating the other fish. I don't have any experience with fin rot, so I'm not sure if that's what happened, but if it occurred suddenly, it's not likely to be fin rot: Causes Symptoms and Treatment of Fin Rot Another thing I *have* seen is they could have got their tail fin stuck or caught on something in the tank and tore it trying to get free. I hope things work out okay for you. |

It just looks like his entire tail fin was completely removed! It looks strangely even up close but I can see some tearing in the tail fin. I'm going tomorrow to pick up something for his fins to make sure they dont get infected since all I have at home is melafix...which apparently is toxic to cories! I also plan to have him in a breeding box and put him back inside his original aquarium; he looks pretty depressed and I want to factor out he's like this because he's missing his other buddies. I can also medicate him there rather than possibly killing off my cycling bacteria. At least my cycling tank is not looking bad at all. I just need to get rid of the .25 ammonia that is pervasive but not surprising for a new tank but my nitrites are 0 and my nitrates is 10. |

Hopefully he lives through the ordeal but it sounds like it will eventually grow. |

I'm pretty much redoing my turtle's tank when my seasonal work is done with. I've decided to take out the pea gravel as it has a tendency to collect waste despite the double filtration. Instead of leaving the tank bare, as the filters need rocks to properly filter things, I'm switching to river rocks about 1-2 inches each. It's not gonna be easy, but my turtle could benefit from it. |

Sounds like a plan! I love river rocks, they look really nice. I haven't been able to use them myself as my oscar would knock them around (so he has bare bottom) and my cories would have a hard time scrounging food with them (they have sand) but it sounds perfect for a turtle tank! |

They were in the hexagon I was using to grow out some anubias and java fern, unfortunately I didn't find out until too late that the fertilizer I was using on the plants could harm them. Sorry blue man group, I tried my best Hopefully this little PSA will prevent others from having this experience, as I felt very guilty. I thought shrimps were hardy little cleaners, but I guess they are vulnerable in some cases. |

They live for ages and they're so friendly and curious! I will say I don't like the fancy goldfish trade though, I have similar feelings towards them and the unhealthy dog breeds; they don't deserve to have issues bred into them on purpose, but all are worthy of living their best lives regardless. Hell, if I had all the money, space and know-how in the world I'd run a fish rescue |
