Simple question to kick off the new forum threads:

What original works are you writing or what have you written, if you don't mind sharing? I know some people like to keep that under wraps. Any ideas that didn't make the cut are welcome here too, or if you just have a really cool idea for a character, setting, etc.

I'll start off with a scrapped idea for a medieval world in which three competing tribes were forced to set roots in a small valley. They would either be forced to cooperate, merge, or fight, but whoever happened to be king in each tribe had the final say in which would be chosen. The story was going to open with each of the three first kings, all brothers, choosing a successor as they passed into old age.

*cracks knuckles* I have specialized software and tons of physical notebooks dedicated to writing.

Well, I am constantly world-building. My partner and I have had a setting for about 4-5 years now, even older if you count the original layout of our setting, and that's pretty much where the majority of my creative time goes! I work on my own sections, and whenever I felt the urge, I wrote short stories about the characters in the world, or created some more characters to explore another facet of our lore.

Incidentally, because last year we decided to make a Pathfinder game for the setting, it's really gotten us to write so much more for the setting! And, because we have players invested thoroughly into the world lore, I eventually began to get ideas for projects I could actually work on. Not only is it fun for me, but it gives our players a different look of the setting they've come to love, explore new characters they won't meet, and overall, enjoy themselves! It's way more motivating to write when you have an audience who really enjoys your content.

Currently I have one on-going project that involves a character the players have met in the actual campaign. It'll take place in her distant future, where she's been crowned as king of an archipelago country who work primarily in city-states. The story focuses on her campaign against a scavenging-pirate group known as the Khulra of Blades, and her primary antagonist being the leader of the group. She deals with it in very complex ways, and it's just a subject I've been craving to write for a long while! The setting is very much a science-fantasy romp, so it's odd for me to go into deep detail, but our pirates of the setting are definitely not from our main world. I really love writing essentially what is Outsider pirates, stranded on a planet that's not theirs.

What I have been writing in the past week is an original story about my tumblr OC, Speck the Rat. A mutated lab rat who was put though some tests involving rapid evolution and is now able to speak and think on the same level as human beings. She had her own character blog for years which I used for roleplays and such. Anyway, I'm piecing together her full origin story. I don't want to go into any details as it's still in the early stages and deciding what exactly will make the cut or be tossed into the trash bin.

What I will tell now is that she has a split personality, her friendly musical Speck self, and a bitter misanthrope with some military training called SPECIE-011. What I have never revealed until now is that Speck isn't the only surviving guinea pig of those tests, just the first.

There's also another story I've been playing around with in my head for years, going through several revisions, settings, and entire plot changes but never could settle with just one solid idea. So I thought why not turn it into one long anthology type series? A couple elements for sure have hardly changed since the beginning is it's a high fantasy setting with original races (save for humans and one or two fantasy races already existing for centuries), with magic, mythical beasts, the works. The one overarching plot is there is a powerful, seemingly benevolent queen who had been conquering other lands for years expanding her own empire with the one goal of eliminating all those who would dare speak badly of her. She has a large organization of spies keeping tabs on everyone they can in her growing empire. Each book will focus on a different set of characters and how they manage to live under her rule. I'll likely make that my main focus after Speck's story.

Aww, you scrapped that? Sounds like it would be interesting if you wrote it. Maybe a fun challenge too, because I'm imagining having to keep track of three small governments.

@Jelly
Wow, you've done a lot of brainstorming! I like the idea of the scavenging pirates vs. the king. Sounds like there could be a lot of room for comedy too, if the pirates know next to nothing about the culture(s) and inventions of that planet. ^^

@Aveture
I like rats. Sentient rats are even better. Still, poor Speck, being a lab rat couldn't have been fun. And ooh, stories with original races are always interesting. Or even classic races that've been modified so much as to be original races.

I've been writing and/or brainstorming five different stories on and off for a while, some of them since 2012. My favorite one at the moment is about an alternate (or future) humanity where everyone is made of either a solid metal or mineral. The story takes into account the actual properties of those metals and minerals, so it's been a lot of fun figuring things out, like how a mercury person could exist in this world without being a puddle, or how an alkali metal person could exist without being a danger to everyone and themselves. And of course, these people live on a low-gravity planet because otherwise they'd be super-heavy mofos who couldn't move without breaking themselves, lol. Even then, they're still pretty heavy--one of the characters is an osmium kid who has to use a special wheelchair to get around paved areas, because if he walked, he'd cause property damage with every step. Anyway, as much as I want to, I can't post this story in the forums because the plot indirectly (and sometimes directly) criticizes social norms, which could be seen as political. :p

...But I am gonna post a story about androids, because no writing board is complete without androids. ʕ•ᴥ•ʔ

@BK47 Y'always gotta have robots somewhere.

As @Jelly mentioned already, she and I share a constructed setting together that we both adore, and have been working on for the better part of 5 years. It's a collaborative project that really exercises our creative energies and I have to say it's an incredibly important part of myself. Science-fantasy with dragons, constructs, alien pirates, Greek-inspired warmongers, caste-based lizardfolk with different forms based on birth temperature, mind-breaking eldritch beings from between the stars... there's a lot. I'm currently running the Pathfinder campaign that she mentioned as the DM and it's been probably the most engaging hobby I've had in... forever.

I have a story I'd like to write taking place in the setting, but I'm not sure if I'll have time to write it anytime soon. It's been a story I've had since even before the world took its current shape and has changed almost to the point of being unrecognizeable from 7 years ago, but it's still very important to me. Maybe some day.

I'm currently working on a book trilogy basically about the conflict between dragons and humans.

In detail, how it all started and what's it all about:

At first, dragons and humans were very neutral towards each other, never really fought. At some point the civilisation started growing, and thus taking away dragons' territories, overhunting and cutting down massive amounts of trees, what caused dragons to starve and they had nowhere to go, so they started stealing livestock from people and causing first fights with farmers.

People, wanting to scare the dragons away, began training and eventually formed a Clan of Dragon Hunters and then started killing those reptiles to protect humans' animals and villages. At some point people became so strong that some dragons decided to shapeshift into humans, although it wasn't fully successful because of how the magic works in this world. Their human forms were not perfect and still contained a few dragon traits, like thin pupils, fangs and dragon ears, but also it permanently changed the way they looked like in their original forms, making them look and behave more "human". To trick people into thinking, that they are real humans, they made up a story that they come from distant lands and they explore new cultures and technologies. Thanks to that some beasts adapted to a new life, some used this disguise to seek revenge on Hunters or steal food from villages, and others viewed shapeshifting as a disgrace and shamed them.

Hunters, not being able to recognise who's a shapeshifted dragon and who comes from "distant lands", decided to create a chemical weapon that would drive dragons insane and change them into psychotic murderers. They succeeded and called the weapon Wilderness (WdS), then infected two dragons with it and released them to begin massive dragon extinction.

Of course the beasts wanted to do something against it, first trying to create an antidote (with no result), and then creating an ointment called Andvert that prevents dragons from getting an infection for 24 hours, which is now helping them kill their infected brethren.

That's at least the prologue in short... The whole book series though is going to be shown from multiple perspectives, for example a main character Yerghan, whose brother got infected, a past Hunter, young Huntress abused by her father, an alcoholic werecat with an unknown past and many more But overall it will revolve around Yerghan and his life, and every book in the trilogy will be set in a different year.

What do you think? Ask me questions and give me some critique!

High fantasy dragons? That aren't always bloodthirsty brutes? Yes please! This sounds like a great development draft already! There are so many directions to follow, and it's good you've planned it to span a trilogy because that's a lot of ground to cover. I like the potential elements of a witch-hunt drama, of essentially bounty hunters trying to weed out the "dragons" from the "distant kin" without realizing all of them are actually dragons. You could have all sorts of characters on both sides of the coin, hunters who genuinely believe the dragons are evil and attempting to sneak in with the distant kin, hunters who just choose at random because they're bloodthirsty, dragons who befriend hunters under the assumption that they're just distant kin trying to help identify who's pretending to be, and all the situations they find themselves in. As a reader knowing the 'distant kin' are just a front, the tension could mount at any moment. One wrong move could destroy everything, and everything would constantly be in question.

Throw in dragon advocates, the dynamics of trying to weave a new subset of people into an existing society, the "true" dragons dealing with their own sickness... crazy plots at every turn! And who knows what kind of crazy tech a group of desperate humans wielding crude magics could think up?

@Chicken_Raptor Yeah, exactly that! Although Hunters aren't exactly like "bounty hunters", but they are actually a payed organisation by kings who look over bigger nearby cities. Hunters are protecting people from certain incidents involving not only dragons (although mainly), but also other creatures who are a threat for civillians.

The werecat aspect will also be pretty interesting, because the majority of them are in their own organisation that hunts down werewolves, vampires; overall, infected people who are deadly to others. The rest of them (less civilised ones) are more feral and will live in tribes, minding their own business basically and attacking only when threatened.

There's a lot to work on, but I'll try my best to write it :,)

Well, I'm currently writing a design proposal, but I'm guessing you mean fiction or hobby writing. Currently working on a New York slice-of-life-with-a-twist and a mafia action-thriller fiction, and also have some theatre stuff on the backburner

Sounds like a lot to work with! You’re certainly keeping busy.

A note to everyone, We don’t discriminate between fiction and non-fiction here! Bring on all the things! Writing a biography? Who’s it on? College dissertation? That’s still writing! Fiction may be the more popular topic, but non-fiction is just as valid.

Speaking of, anyone else notice we describe writing as either being “fake”’ or “not-fake” instead of “real” and “not-real”? Hmm...

I’m not a really great creative writer(aside from things relating to research), and am more of an artist. I’m currently working on a big webcomic project with a close friend of mine who is a good writer, so I can handle the art and part of the world building. It is very roughly based on fantasy roleplaying stories from our childhood adventures, and I suggested they could make an interesting story if we do it correctly. We scrapped almost everything except for a few themes and character concepts so we can rework it into something much more in depth that mature audiences can enjoy.
As of right now, it’s a fantasy adventure that takes place in an original world populated with all kinds of creatures with dragons at the focus. It has themes of tragedy, friendship, drama, wonder and a little bit of horror. Dragon society consists of many groups and sub factions with unique characteristics that define them. We have I think around eighty pages of everything from environments, mythology, factions, characters, creatures, etc. I can’t tell too much since we constantly change ideas and the plot details are still under construction. But we have multiple arcs planned and expect this webcomic to run a long time. It’s been in development for almost two years now and we don’t want to rush it, especially with our busier lives. Neither of us has done anything this big before but we are really excited about it, and can’t wait to see where it goes. If it is possible, we might try publishing it sometime in the next several years.

As for something more realistic, soon I’m going to write about the social and moral effects of artificial intelligence, which is pretty interesting.

OoooOooooh I'd be really interested in reading this whenever you write it! I happen to be writing a story about androids, and I find topics like this super fascinating. I hope you write it soon! (Or y'know, when you have the motivation, just ignore me, lol)
