Regulus
Kyagrowl

• Likes: Night strolls, eating dessert for every meal, collecting trinkets
• Dislikes: Alcor (but also everyone else in Asteria), picking fights with those who don’t fight back
Sirius
Luputrix
•A pretty laid back guy, but don’t underestimate him. A skilled musician who is ready to switch from ‘lax mode to serious mode at the drop of a hat. Has nothing against Asteria like Regulus does, but Regulus is pretty much his boss, and he gets paid to listen to his boss.
• Likes: making new friends, obscure instruments, taking as many breaks as Regulus will let him, earning money
• Dislikes: overtime/extended practices, arguing over little things
Corona
Bovitaur

• Dislikes: anyone who gets in her way

Alcor stretched his arms and yawned as he got out of bed, almost hitting his hands on the bunk above him. It had been almost a year since he moved into the agency’s dorms and he still wasn’t used to them, especially in the mornings. Luckily no one slept in the bed above him; Alcor, Gino, and Cana all slept separately in each of the three available bunk beds.
The Ursufuzz turned and smiled at the four little succulents sitting on the windowsill beside him, still doing well and soaking in the morning sun. Out of all of Alcor’s little hobbies, taking care of these plants was the easiest.
Gino was already wide awake. How he managed to wake up every morning without bothering the other two was a mystery, considering the mess in the kitchen from making his own breakfast and already playing video games when it was barely 7AM. Though the only reason was Cana would nag him if he played them when they could be practicing in the afternoon, or when they could be sleeping early and getting their rest. The Fluffpaxa had no room to complain when he didn’t even wake up until 8, so Gino was free to do whatever he wanted until Cana was ready for the day.
Alcor put Gino’s dirty dishes in the sink before making his own bowl of cereal and sitting next to the Rootax to watch him play, hoping that would at least give Cana one less thing to complain about first thing in the morning.
“Good Morning Gino.”
“Morning Al.” Gino responded, not taking his eyes off the TV.
Cana lumbered into the kitchen and shortly after, and sat himself right on the couch. His eye mask was still sitting on his head, but the rollers were already out of his hair (and it was looking great, as always). He didn’t really care for whatever it was Gino was playing, but he idly watched the TV anyway, his breakfast tea needed time to steep. Cana’s ear twitched when a kitchen timer went off and he got up to grab his caffeine. He barely took a sip when his phone went off on the counter.
“Hey guys?” He called out to the other two. Gino paused his game and Alcor turned around on the couch. “Our manager says we’re having an urgent meeting in a bit.”
Gino and Alcor exchanged glances. “Did...did he say what it’s about?”
“Nope.”
Alcor’s heart thumped with anxiety. “I hope it’s not bad news, our first big concert is only a two weeks away. Y...you don’t think it’s about..?”
“Well,” Cana sighed and put down his tea. “There’s only one way to find out.”
HelloListeners!Thankyoufortuningin! ✧Today we’re with CP’s newest singing sensation, Asteria, here in the studio for this short segment! Just a few weeks from their biggest concert yet!
Gino: Thanks for having us!
Cana: Likewise.
✧Now, I have a few things to ask, but to start, I’ve heard that joining this group was the first time you boys had met each other. How’s it been, going from strangers to co-workers, and roommates, in such a short time?
Cana: Personally? It was a bit strange at first, I’ll admit. I never had the experience of living alongside anyone besides my family before, so we’re still getting used to each other's habits and routines.
Gino: Same here! I’m totally used to sleeping whenever, so sticking to a daily schedule is kinda hard for me, haha.
Cana: There’s that too. It’s not a strict schedule, but we do a lot of practicing and other things. Like going to meetings, shoots, social events, so on. Even though we’re still new, it gets fairly busy.
✧Are there any things you like to do in your downtime? Or is it all-work-and-no-play?
Gino: Nah, we have a bit of time here and there. Sometimes I play games, I have some on my phone too, ya know, when we’re traveling somewhere or whatever.
Cana: Hm, well, I enjoy reading, but only when there’s time set aside for it. I can’t read if I have to put the book down every ten minutes to do something else.
Gino: You also like buying weird teas and taking two-hour baths and- (thump)
Cana: Quiet, you. As long as I’m working hard and putting in effort, I’ll indulge myself all I want.
✧What about you, Alcor? You’re pretty quiet for the group’s lead singer.
Alcor: a-uh? S-Sorry! I haven’t done an interview like this since I applied to the agency, ha ha…
Gino: He’s camera shy, don’t mind him!
Cana: This is a radio station, Gino.
Gino: Just shy in general, then.
✧So, anything you like to do between work?
Alcor: Um, I don’t know. I have a few hobbies, but they’re not really anything I can do on-the-go. I, uh, I have a few plants in my room...and if I have a bit of time in the dorm, I like to bake. Oh! Actually, I like to draw- well, it’s more like doodling, I’m not very good at it...but it’s fun!
✧It seems you three are pretty different, not just in the images you portray as idols, but in your personal lives too. Is it hard to get along? I can’t imagine being around the same people you work and live with is easy.
Cana: No, it’s not easy. Alcor is pretty easy to be around, he keeps to himself and he’s tidy. Gino, on the other hand…
Gino:Hey! Al doesn’t mind if I’m not tidy.
Cana: He doesn’t mind it when you eat his snacks or borrow his things without a word, either.
Gino: I pay him back! I thank him by helping him out during practice.
Cana: You should be helping him with that regardless if you’re stealing his food or not.
Alcor: I-I don’t mind it! Really!
Cana: Alcor…
Alcor: If I did, I’d say something.
Cana: ...Alright. Gino, don’t think you’re off the hook just because Alcor says he’s okay.
Gino: Hey, you weren’t this nice to me or Al when we first met. Why just me now?
Cana: Because Alcor is polite, and works hard, and doesn’t borrow shampoo that isn’t his without asking. (sighs) I’ll drop it for now, but we’re going to have a talk later.
Gino: Fine, mom.
Alcor: A ha ha...Sorry. I wish I could say they don’t usually argue like this, but...uh…
✧(Laughter) It’s alright! It’s good to see that you still get along and work together even with disagreements like this. Or is it because you're all now comfortable with one another to argue and make up so quickly? Especially with your first big concert coming up in just three weeks.
Alcor: O-oh! Yes! It’ll be our first live stage performance since our debut. We’re working hard to prepare, but we’re really excited too.
✧One last thing, is any of the recent gossip also partially motivating you? Are they making you more nervous, or are they just baseless rumors?
Alcor: -R...rumors…?
✧Have you not heard? Let’s see… ‘Novae Entertainment, the long-time competitor to Comet-Productions, is managing the yet-to-be confirmed opening act for the EVVS Spring Music Festival, Zenith ’.
Alcor: oh..uh…mmm...
(Silence)
Cana: ...Tch, gossip is just gossip. No need to get worked up about it.
Gino: As long as we’re still in the show, I’m game. A hundred new bands could play at EVVS Music for all I care, but we’re gonna be the best one!
Cana: Of course.
Gino: How could we be nervous, with all our dazzling admirers?
Alcor: Y-...yeah! Um, I hope all our fans will keep cheering us on with their love and support!
✧That’s wonderful to hear! I wish you boys luck on your first big show! Listeners, be sure to buy tickets to the EVVSSpringMusicFestival,orwatchtheLivestreamon-
Regulus leaned back languidly in his chair, feet up on the glass table of the meeting room that overlooked the city. He didn’t have a reason to be early. Living in the penthouse just a few floors above simply made it hard to have an excuse to be late to company meetings.
“Sir,” a secretary addressed the Kyagrowl. “Your father and the others are here.”
Regulus didn’t bother to move, simply nodding his head. Everyone who entered the room sat themselves at the table, the only one sitting in either of the seats next to Regulus was the Albino Xeldron, President Arrakis.
Across them were three others, a Luputrix, a Bovitaur, and behind them was the agent who had scouted them. Or rather, the agent Regulus had asked to scout them personally. The Luptrix, Sirius, was looking all over the room. It was fairly empty, but perhaps he was taking in the pristinity of it all. The Bovitaur Corona just looked annoyed. She just wanted to know why she was here. Regulus briefly exchanged glances with President Arrakis before the dragon cleared his throat to speak.
“As my secretary should have filled you in, as of tonight, my son Regulus will be the lead in his new band. And the two of you,” he pointed to Corona and Sirius, “are its new members.”
Sirius chuckled. “Apple fell pretty far from the tree, eh? I’m flattered, really, but I ain’t exactly agency-worthy talent.”
“My son thinks you’re the best in the city, he has quite an ear for music. His specialty is in singing, just he wants you two to back him up on the instrumentals.”
Corona scoffed, her husky voice, while not totally a surprise, made Sirius flinch in his seat. “And why should we play along with your little rich-kid’s game?”
Regulus grabbed a black metal briefcase that sat by the foot of his chair. He handed the case off to the secretary who in turn, placed it in front of the skeptic recruits with an unexpected heft to it, clunking onto the glass table. The secretary clicked the locks and opened the case, revealing dozens of rolls of golden coins inside. Corona’s eyes lit up, Sirius couldn't even begin to count how much money was in the case.
“Because that,” Regulus smirked ever so slightly, “is what you’ll earn just for saying ‘yes’.”
“Ya mean we get to split this case just for joining?” Sirius raised an eyebrow.
“No.” Regulus held up a second black suitcase, jostling it lightly to prove it sounded just as heavy as the first one. “You each get your own case.”
Sirius whistled, impressed.
Corona’s eyes narrowed. “So what’s the catch, kid? We gotta assassinate someone? We gotta dress up in some synth-pop vapor wave laser BS?”
Regulus sat upright in his chair and leaned forward. “Have you heard of the group ‘Asteria’? The boyband from Comet Productions.”
Sirius thought about i. “Hm, I’ve seen ads with ‘em in it. Nice kids, kinda noobish, makes me wanna cheer ‘em on though.”
“I want to crush them out of the music industry.” Regulus’ claws grazed the glass, barely keeping in mind not to leave any marks on it, unlike last time.
“Oh.”
“So you want us to beat them up?”
“No, not literally crush them,” he sighed, leaning back into his chair and taking a second to calm down. “I want to beat them at their own game. I want them to know they can’t get away with mistakes just because they flash a cute smile and bat their eyes and make empty promises. I want us to outshine them at every opportunity we can and show them they can never have what it takes to be on top.”
“Hmm, an’ ya need us ta do that.”
“Yes.”
There was only a second of silence before Corona heartily laughed. “Kid’s got a beef with some other brats, not my problem. If we help, we keep getting paid?”
“Of course. The better we do, the more bonuses. If we take their spot in concerts, interviews, ad shoots, whatever, I’ll double your salary for that day, too.”
“And Papa’s got no problem with this?” She looked to the dragon, who simply smiled and shrugged.
“Regulus has a talent for working in the music industry, even if it’s just his gut feeling. Whatever he spends, he could earn back twice as much back.”
“Confident, huh? Fine. I’m in, Kid.” Corona smiled almost wickedly. Cause a little trouble for a hefty sum? How could she refuse. Sirius seemed to agree.
“Same here! Where do we begin, boss?”
Regulus smiled with relief and success. President Arrakis smiled too, standing up to leave the room and dialing numbers on his phone. “No work for now, we’ll call you when we’re ready to begin. But as of tonight, after I make some calls, you’re officially our company’s newest group. Congratulations.”
The president and secretary left, along with the agent, just leaving the three to themselves.
“By the way,” Sirius spoke up, “what’s the name of our band?”
“It’d better not be something stupid.”
“How’s this? ‘The highest point in the night sky straight above anyone looking at it, the pinnacle, insurmountable: Zenith.’ ”
“What do you mean our TV spot was canceled?!” Gino and Cana exclaimed at the same time.
Their manager had called the boys to an emergency meeting that morning, the three of them were surprised to see that their agency’s President was the one holding it. Sometimes, Mr. Rastavan gave off the feeling of an elite, being a Xeldron of course. But you might assume he was just another dragon with how he usually acted. Today, it seemed, was business time.
“‘NOVEA’ has always been our company’s closest rival in the industry. It’s always been somewhat head to head, but in the last few years they’ve had a lot of running starts. You three, Asteria, are the hottest group ‘Comet’ signed so far, and things were going well.” He sighed, looking down at his computer, occasionally typing with a frustrated ‘click’ of the keyboard. “Last night, it seems that Novea just signed on a new band.”
“Wait, last night?!” Cana spoke up. “Are you being figurative, or do you mean literally, a band got a contract and stole our spot on MNews16’s interview overnight?”
“Not just a band, Cana. A new band, literally formed last night. It’s not public news yet, I was told personally by Novea's president the hour it happened, I believe. I’m assuming the MNews16 will be the first big stunt. Fans will tune in expecting to see Asteria, the drama on social media afterwards will blow up their name-“ the President began to ramble.
Mr. Zafir scoffed, the Pydeer manager looking just slightly more annoyed than his default expression. “Using a backhanded move like this to jumpstart their fame, I can’t believe the audacity.”
Gino took a second to think. “So, did you call us here just to tell us the interview got stolen?”
Mr. Ras shook his head. “Unfortunately, no. There’s been a schedule change because of this, I’m trying to make the best of this situation.” He turned to Mr. Zafir, who was hitting notes into a planner.
“This week, you’ll be doing a radio broadcast interview instead, a short Q&A segment. There’s only one other thing between that and the EVVS music festival, so there’s plenty of time to get ready.”
“Which is the other thing I have to bring up. Next week, we’re having a personal meeting with Novea and the new band to discuss a conflict for the music festival’s lineup.”
“A... conflict…” Alcor muttered nervously, the first thing he has said the entire meeting.
“Don’t tell us they’ve stolen our spot in the show too.”
“No, not yet at least. I’m sending emails now so I can get a better idea of what’s going on. Auugh. Arrakis has always been competitive, but he’s never been this…malicious. I don’t know what it is, this is definitely beyond the level of ‘business rivals’. He always just lets his stars take care of themselves...meaning that this new band might be specifically aiming for your spotlight.”
“So we just gotta tell ‘em ‘hey, stop’ to their faces?” Gino asked.
“Pretty much.” Cana sighed.
“Well, have a little tact, boys. ‘Hey, stop please’ would be preferred.”
“A-And if they say...no?”
Mr. Ras looked at Alcor. The Ursufuzz looked unsure, though that was nothing new. “Then we roll with the punches and move forward the best we can. Zafir, get the boys ready for that radio show. Until that meeting, we just have to wait and see what happens.”
- Part 2
“Nice building” Gino commented, spinning casually in his fancy office chair. Asteria was sitting in one of NOVEA Entertainment’s many meeting rooms. It was very close to the top floor, only for meetings appointed with the company’s President.
“NOVEA’s building is an all-in-one unit, unlike us, who uses different buildings across the city. This place is also the recording studio, practice floors, and the dorms.” Mr. Rastavan mentioned, looking out the window as the sun began to set.
“Must be easier to be at work on time, when everything is a few floors away from your bed.” said Cana, keeping an eye on Gino, in case he broke his chair.
“It’s stifling, it also means you have no excuse to be late or snowed-in.” The Xeldron muttered. Alcor sat quietly in his seat, flinching when the door opened. An Albino Xeldron walked in, smiling at the group.
“Now nice to see you’re all here!” He gleamed.
“Mr. Arrakis.” Mr. Rastavan greeted.
“Ras.” He casually reasoned. “This doesn’t have to be so formal, does it? There’s a lot to discuss.”
“It’s business. The sooner we start the more we can get through.”
“Fair enough, Mr. Rastavan.” He shrugged. “Mira? Bring in the band.”
A petite Sealott who had followed Mr. Arrakis nodded her head, probably the manager of the other band, and left the room briefly to get the others.
“I’d like Asteria to meet NOVEA’s newest band, Zenith.”
The door opened again. A sleepy looking Luputrix and a gruff Bovitaur entered the room, shortly followed by a Kyagrowl-
“Regi?!” Alcor exclaimed, jumping out of his seat. Cana and Gino both stared at their leader, having never heard his voice that loud outside of singing. Alcor looked at the Kyagrowl, wondering if he had made a mistake. The Kyagrowl did not seem to acknowledge him in any way.
“Hm, have you met? The one over there is Sirius, the tall lady there is Corona. And this grump here is Regulus, my son. He’s the leader of the band.”
Mr. Rastavan blinked. “Your son?! I don’t contact you for nearly two years and you turn up with your...secret child?”
Mr. Arrakis laughed. “Don’t be silly! You would’ve known much sooner if you were an uncle, hahah, we’re not that old. I adopted him, he’s been helping out the business for a a year now.”
“So you’re making your son your employee?”
“Don’t be mistaken, he came to me through a proper audition way before adopting him. He has the talent, I’m just giving him the means to do as he pleases with it.”
“We’ve met them, can I leave now?” Regulus asked. The other two seemed indifferent to the situation. “We’ll be in the studio downstairs if you need us.”
“Hmm, okay. I already know what your input will be, so I’ll call you up if we can’t reach an agreement.”
“Whatever.” He muttered back, glancing over at Alcor for barely a second before leaving the room. He had odd eyes- one blue, one strikingly, bright green- and it pained Alcor to see them disregard him in such a cold way. Corona left without a word and Sirius waved at the boys before following.
Mr. Arrakis took a seat and began talking to Mr. Rastavan about business and the music festival.
Alcor sunk into his seat, hardly listening to a word.
- Part 3
The meeting dragged on for an hour, less about actual business and more about jokes and quips at the expense of Mr. Rastavan’s patience. Despite Asteria’s president’s usual upbeat, easygoing attitude, it all seemed to vanish into thin air when it came to Mr. Arrakis.
After some bickering and minimal name-calling, it was clarified that Zenith would simply be opening the EVVS Spring Music Festival because another performer had dropped. Asteria would be performing exactly as scheduled.
Mr. Ras was all too eager to finally leave, and went ahead to bring around the car to drive the boys back to their dorm. The Boys stayed back with Mr. Zafir to help him pack up some papers and shake hands with Mr. Arrakis before heading to the elevator.
It only went down one floor before the doors opened again, and Regulus and Sirius both got on.
It was a very silent ride down to the first floor.
A few seconds passed before Alcor gathered the courage to say anything.
“Re-“
“Quiet.” Regulus spat, not even so much as looking at Alcor to say it.
It surprised Alcor how much that little word stung.
“W-why are you so angry at me? What did I do?” Alcor almost forgot there was anyone else in the elevator besides them.
“I never said I was angry.” Regulus continued to face forward, his face refusing to give away any sign of emotion aside from indifference.
“I’m not stupid, You are angry! Just tell me what’s wrong so I can fix it!” Alcor’s voice cracked a bit. Everything was silent and Alcor realized that they had reached the bottom floor, face flushing red when he noticed the receptionist and a few others in the lobby looking over at them.
Regulus had one foot out the elevator door when he leaned over to Alcor and whispered, “If you don’t already know why I’m ‘angry’, then it’s a little too late to try to fix it now.”
He turned and walked off, not waiting for Sirius to follow behind.
The doors almost closed again before someone hit a button and nearly dragged Alcor to the car. The ride back was pretty quiet, aside from the front seat conversation between their President and Manager.
Alcor was just looking out the window when Cana tapped his shoulder.
“Are you okay?”
Alcor gave a weak smile. “I’m alright-“
“Yeah,” Gino spoke up, putting his phone down. “And I’m not stuck on the water level in Stormblade 2. Do you really know that guy? He’s too much.”
“I do-...I did. I...used to know him. Now...I’m not so sure if I still do.”
The Ursufuzz didn’t look like he wanted to keep talking about it. Gino switched topics and began complaining about his game. When they got back to their dorm, Cana made Alcor some tea to help him sleep. It helped him calm down a bit, it really did.
But that night, Alcor had a hard time falling asleep.
