The Grade Averager can be a bit confusing at first, and admittedly I've gotten to the point where I only use it for items that are at least grade 90, and anything under that gets sold back to the server. But you might not be able to afford to throw away low-grade ingredients at your level, if they're the only ones that you have. Your guess is correct that higher level pets mean higher grades, and SLVL is also a factor (I think--hoards have been tweaked a few times already, so I may be wrong). But until you have high-level pets, the best way to get g100 ingredients is to buy them on the auction house or people's usershops.

To me, the most helpful thing about the grade averager is that it clears up inventory space. Again, at your level that's probably not something that you need to worry about yet.

I'm not really an expert on the averager, so hopefully someone else can provide a more detailed answer. Though it looks like you've already read the guide, which is pretty much the best info you could get, lol.
