With @Isegard's recently commissioned outdoor path item, an idea was born. Currently, the path acts like a carpet - it only has two rotations, and you cannot connect them to one another while facing different directions.

If we had a separate category for garden paths, we could commission way more of those to match different tastes. A path tile is a single item that will rotate automatically depending on adjacent path tiles (from 4 possible directions). For example, if it detects a floor piece both above it and to the right of it, it will turn into a corner piece connecting the two.

I already said how much I like this idea on discord but I wanna support it here too!~

if automating the sprite adaptation is too much to code, alternatively the player could maybe manually switch around the sprite from a dropdown menu (or by clicking on it in the house decorator), just like rotations, just that instead of "up, down, left, right" it's "upwards, sideways, center, corner (4 directions), endpiece (also 4 directions)" or something along those lines.

There's a lot of different path types that can be made for both indoors and outdoors so a special item category would make sense imo. It could also possibly stack below ground covers so that we could put our carpets and concrete slabs on top?

edit: oh and, I forgot to mention it would evidently need a lot of sprites, which is a downside; while the artist can just easily rotate things like corner and end-pieces, that'd still be like a dozen image files associated with just one item. I hope that wouldn't be too big of a deal but I still tend to worry about things like server strain lol.

@Lorienee A drop-down menu would work too, wonder why I didn't think of that lol

As for the sprites, I coded something like that for a map editor once, it's not hard but holy crap is it a lot of lines haha

But this case seems like it would require way fewer sprites, let's see - the 4 corners, vertical, horizontal, the cross section, connecting right, connecting left, connecting up, and connecting down. So that's 11 sprites ^^ It's still less than a 16-color item would require so hey :D

I thought, only 11 sprites sounds unlikely, so I went ahead and made a small reference on what kind of pieces we'd need for a good path experience:

Though, this "set" was made with larger pathed areas in mind (for example a path that's 2-3 tiles wide rather than 1, or a 6x6 area entirely covered in path tiles and such). If paths were to only support 1 tile width then it'd need 15 sprites, but if it supported more freedom it'd need like, 30...

Specifically talking about paths that have defined 'edges' though, with maximum aesthetics applied meaning said 'edges' connect nicely at all times, hence the little corner pieces on those individual tiles. Some paths don't have 'edges' so those would probably need a drastically smaller amount of sprites which could create more complications... which sucks because I'm still totally behind this idea.

@Lorienee

This would allow the creation of wider paths, what I originally had in mind were small 1x1 tile paths, so it would only really require the following:

(So I miscounted, it's not 11 but it's still close haha)
