In order to get more space, you do have to buy a new house. In my opinion, the fastest way for a new player to make PC (pixcoins, the game's main currency) is to play Roodoku. This is a Sudoku minigame that rewards between 100 and 150 PC per game, and you can get the reward three times a day -- so, 300 to 450 PC per day. That may not sound like much until you know that the first house upgrade costs only 750 PC (new houses and their prices can be viewed by going to the Game tab >Housing > Buy New House). So if you play Roodoku three times a day, you'll be able to buy your first new house within 2 or 3 days.
