Oh man, I love your collection! Unique fruits is a really cool focus. Where do you source most of your trees? Do you grow them from seed, or are you able to find saplings somewhere?

@Aveture
A lot of plants can definitely be picky, especially when they're a wide variety. That's why I try to stick to one general type - once I've learned how to care for one, I can care for all of them! (Well, there's always those couple that are STILL not having it... but that just means they don't belong in my house! lol)

@cynderplayer
Cacti are lovely! As long as you give them enough light and don't overwater them, they'll do just fine! They're why I like succulents - they thrive on neglect! :P

@goatcheese
Ah! I love bromeliads! And there are some orange cacti, but they are typically grafted onto green cacti parts because they do not have enough chlorophyll to stay alive. If it's just the spines that are orange, it's probably dyed. What do you like to grow in your garden?

@SilentHowling
Oooh - desert, I'm guessing? Or at least somewhere mild and dry! I wish I could have a yard of cacti or desert plants in general, but it gets way too wet and a little bit cold where I am.

Now this is my kinda thread..!

I started gardening when I was 15 because I lived in an area that was extremely rural and rather boring in northern California, so I had to do something; plus I always loved plants as a kid. A veggie garden was my first experience. I first started with tomatoes, cucumber, and summer squash, and then eventually graduated to watermelons, cantaloupe (aka rockmelon), bell peppers, artichoke, and eventually began to grow strawberries and an assortment of peppers. I also started growing little planters of simple flowers, like pansies and marigold. I got old horse troughs, repainted them bright, fun colors, and set them near the porch. It was GREAT, but then I moved. But, as much as I want to have another vegetable patch, I still haven't done full research into how to counter Australia's cockatoo problems...

So I'm now back to gardening, and this time I'm trying a variety of flowers I've always had a love for. I started off growing oregano and basil in a small planter (some babies I got for Christmas), but this week I've bought a hydrangea and a small pot of violets. Hopefully soon I can find some peonies since there in season here, and maybe get some roses? I'm keen to start a new garden out at the front of our house solely consisting of native plants, but I'd love to do a corner of succulents too. Succulents are much too good for the soul <3

I'll eventually gather photos. I'm so glad to see there are other plant enthusiasts out there!

Yeah, it seems that only the spines are orange! (Though it is a bit hard to tell because they cover the cactus pretty thoroughly).
I have an herb garden and then a fruit/vegetable garden. In the herb garden, I grow basil, parsley, lavender, cilantro, and a few other things. In my vegetable garden, I have asparagus that's been growing for coming up on three years now, and then I usually plant tomatoes, zucchini, and eggplant. I'm hoping to plant some new things this year, including a strawberry bush.

Ah, Australia is a pretty good climate for succulents! I'd also love to see photos of what you're working on in your new garden. What kind of native plants are you looking at getting?

@goatcheese
Ooh I love strawberries. When I was little, there was a wild strawberry bush growing beside my house in the middle of suburbia! I loved eating the berries, even though they tasted a little odd. :P Also, how long does asparagus take to grow to where you can eat it?

I don’t have much experience with house plants, I had a mimosa plant for a while when i was younger but that’s about it. Aquatic plants tho oh lord I have a lot of things to say. I’ve got a ton of duckweed growing in my fish tanks and I’m not too bothered by it. I throw a few clumps every now and then so it doesn’t block out all light but for the most part I don’t mind it. The other plants are very, very frustrating to deal with though. In one tank I’ve got anubias and amazon swordplants. I find that no matter what I do (especially if I enrich the water with supplements like seachem equilibrium) the anubias always falls apart. I’m seeing some new leaves growing, but they seem rather pale, so I guess we’ll see what happens. I’m my other tank I have some Monte Carlo that I’m desperately trying to keep alive. I’ve had it in the tank for several months now and recently it’s finally started to adapt, and I’m seeing new growth which seems pretty promising.

Oh my gosh...your collection makes me so jealous. All your plants are so beautiful :') They make me want to buy more plants, though I already have 2. (A ball cactus and an...amalgamation of tall cacti, I guess?)
I've also tried to plant cherry tomatoes before. It just never grew any fruit. Ever.

@BK47
Those dragon fruit cacti look super cool! I'd love to try growing plants/cacti from seeds if it's easy.
I've only ever tried growing new succulents by plucking off a leaf and keeping it damp in the sunlight. It sprouted a few new plants :D and I would've had more succulents if my parrot hadn't destroyed them all on sight lol

@Inusui
Thats...a really horrifying transformation. What happened to it??
Succulents are very hardy tho, so I don't think it'll die if you take care of it properly. Maybe you can just keep it in a well lit room if there's no sunlight?

I used to have a 'pet' Norfolk Pine when I was a little kid, but... after we moved it stopped thriving and slowly died

I wanna get another one... or maybe a cactus baby. I wonder what I'd name them...

It was doing ok a week ago when i left for vacation and then my sister said the leaves started to rot so im guessing it was rotting underneath all the healthy stuff when my friend gave it to me

Hello :)
Those succulents look so pretty! I must admit I know very little about them, even though I have some (outside). I bought them in a pack for pretty cheap to place in a little stone wall and they looked really great. I lost some over the years though and there really were only two kinds so maybe I should get 1 or 2 new ones this year.

Seeing these pictures I kind of want to get some for indoors too... but I have a bad track reckord with indoor plants and it would probably be a waste :/

Let's resurrect this thread! :D Spring is finally here in the US and all my local stores and nurseries are getting in hoards of plants in for the season. I have been buying wayyyyyy too many, but I really do love them all! I just need to find room for them!

Has anyone else been spring plant shopping yet?

YES, spring! yes, yes, yes... I was so happy the last few weeks with all the sun we were getting and everything looks so promising this year!

I have been shopping but havent't bought many plants yet. Just some cucumber and pointed cabbage saplings^^ I needed some other things and it was soooo hard to resist all those colorful pansies though. Thankfully I have a lot blooming in my garden already so I can save my money.

I have been getting a lot of work done in the last two weeks though. I made a ton of cuttings that are all doing really well and I'm so, so excited for them to get strong enough for me to plant them/gift them away. (gonna take a while though xD)
I rebuild part of the small wall of one of the flowerbeds, cut away most of the dead parts of my bushes and prepared and planted my vegetable garden.. I got so carried away with all those other things that I haven't started any seeds yet except for the ones I need for my vegetable garden. I need to get that done in the next few weeks or else I'm going to have some empy spots in the summer. On the bright site since I'm late with my seeds this year I might change it up for once and don't grow the same flowers as I do most years xD I really want some strawflowers...

Oh and I got a (indoor) succulent much like the one inusui posted from a relative that was rotting and falling apart so I cleaned of the parts and put them on some soil and have been watering them very carefully and they haven't died yet. One part seems to grow a tiny root so I'm hoping I can grow a new plant from it... I suck at indoor plants though so idk xD

So I recently felt like my place would be nicer with a plant and went ahead and bought one. I think it's a Dracaena Warneckei/Warneckii? I read that it doesn't like direct sunlight, but I still thought a bit of sunshine would be good for it, but it was probably a bit too much as the leaves started to roll inside slightly Now I'm hoping that it will recover from that and continue to grow. I'm gonna try watering it weekly, because I heard common watering is bad for it too. I have almost no plant knowledge, so any tips and advices are welcome

I'm so sorry - I know this is a thousand months too late but I just noticed your poor succulent post from January! It looks like a classic case of rot from either watering too often or from a soil and/or container that holds too much moisture. Unfortunately, most succulents are sold with improper soil or containers. They need gritty soil (at least 50% rocky substrate) and a container with a drainage hole, and only to be watered when the soil is fully dried out. (For me, that's about once every 2 weeks.)

Basically, when moisture sits around a succulent's roots for too long, it weakens the tissues, which opens up a gateway for common soil pathogens to enter. In the wild, succulents live in well-draining sandy soils and on rocky slopes in shallow grit-filled crevices. They're not built for the dark, peat-rich potting soil we use for most plants!

I know it's probably too late for your beb at this point, but I hope this helps you understand what probably happened!

It's a common misconception that succulents are meant to be indoor plants. Most actually love as much sun as they can get! (I would not consider ANY succulent "low light," and only a small portion "medium light.") But they can do just fine in an indoor environment as long as they are getting very bright light from a window.

How is your succulent doing now? :>

I just left a job in which I got to take care of plants all day, which I loved! I've got about a billion pothos clippings - my S/O started getting worried as every day it seemed like I came home with another cutting in a paper cup. /sweats
I also have a lovely jade plant which was given to me by a friend from work. He hangs out with me at my desk:

(my apartment is north-facing so he doesn't get as much sunlight as he would like :( )

Ahhh, such a lovely jade! It seems like it would be a dream to work with plants all day, but seeing as I'm currently bringing home new plants every week already, I can totally get how it'd become a nightmare quickly, lol! Several of my work friends have gotten into plants and we're constantly exchanging cuttings!

With Mother's Day coming up, I've made my Mom and my Grandma each a succulent fairy garden! (Apologies for the pollen-covered table in my pics!)

Mom's takes inspiration from Asia, with a Japanese fairy, cranes, and dragon statue. I'm really proud of this one!

Grandma's is a little more traditional. I might clean it up a little more before giving it too her... it feels a little chaotic. But she likes bright colors and critters!
