I think this would be great if there was a limit set to how high you can place your amount. If this was a thing then I think players would be more discouraged to bid if the richer players just automatically set their bid really high. I think if you had to go in increments then other players would still have a chance to swoop in and get the bid, but it would still lower the amount of losses you get because you can't stick around to watch the auction. Basically I'd like this if you had to have your bid within a certain amount but if that amount gets surpassed then you can increase it again in the same increments.
